The Pinfire Pistol

A pinfire gun is an older early type of firearm that was invented in Europe before the 1900′s, way before today’s newer modern automatic and semi automatic handguns that we are more familiar with.

A pinfire firearm cartridge is an older, obsolete type of brass cartridge in which the priming powder is ignited by striking a small pin which protrudes radially from just above the base of the cartridge.

Invented in 1828 by a Frenchman by the name of Casimir Lefaucheux, it was one of the earliest practical designs of a metallic cartridge. The pinfire history is closely associated with the development of the breech-loader which replaced older muzzle loading weapons.

The muzzle loaded firearm be it a pistol or, a rifle, required a percussion cap, gunpowder and, a projectile, preferably lead to be loaded sequentially into the firearm using a wad and, a ramrod. On the other hand pinfire cartridges were more convenient, they could contain the percussion cap, powder and, shot in a neat pre-loaded package which was many times faster to fire and reload and was much safer.

Although the Pinfire cartridge is considered obsolete, today there are modern Pinfire cartridges that can reloaded and used over and over again.

Warning shooting a 150 year old firearm is not without risk, it can be very dangerous, if there is a malfunction you may loose something important to you like fingers, a hand or, worse! So always use extreme caution when handling old, antique or, vintage firearms. Contact a gunsmith if you have any doubt whether or not a gun is safe to fire!

Now on the other hand, just holding and shooting vintage firearms can be thrilling, just the thought of holding and handling a gun in your hands that was used in the civil war by a real person can bring the wonder and rush of excitement into the imagination.

When holding the musket used by a common soldier from the revolutionary war you can feel the history, the weight of the actual gun in your hand just makes the experience, when compared to looking at a picture.

The .36 Caliber Colt Revolver

Known as the the Colt Revolving Belt Pistol, and later known as the Colt 1851 Navy, or Navy Revolver, The weapon is a black powder cap and ball revolver. Designed by Samuel Colt in the mid 1850′s, it remained in steady production until 1873, when newer revolvers using more convenient fixed metallic cartridges, came into use.

Could you imagine your life depending on a gun like this in a battle?

You only get six shots then each individual cylinder has to be reloaded by hand. First a measure of powder then, a wad consisting of paper or cloth, whatever you have at the time then, finally the Lead Ball. Now-days we find it much safer to cover the loaded cylinders with grease to prevent a potential gunpowder flashover and keeping the shooter safe from powder burns.

The Loads consisted of black powder and a lead ball or bullet, early metallic foil cartridges, and combustible paper cartridges during the Civil War era. All variations being ignited by a percussion cap applied to the nipple at the rear of the weapons chamber.

The .36 caliber lead ball has a weight of 86 grains and, a velocity of 1,000 fps, it is most comparable to the modern .380 pistol cartridge in power and size.

The sights of the early colt were quite crude consisting of a bead for a front sight with a groove in the top of the hammer, as with most Colt percussion revolvers and the early cartridge revolvers in general. Even though the sights were crude, these revolvers and today’s modern replicas are still quite accurate and deadly.

The .36 caliber Navy revolver was also much lighter than the Third Model Dragoon revolvers developed from the .44 Walker Colt revolvers of 1847, which, given their size and weight, were generally carried in saddle holsters. It is also an enlarged version of the .31 caliber pocket revolvers that evolved from colt’s earlier model Baby Dragoon.

Shooting the .36 caliber Revolver is a definite thrill, first there’s a pop with a flash of white smoke then, there is a louder bang accompanied with a slight wrist bending kick and finally more smoke.

The designation (1851 Colt Navy) was applied by collectors, though the more common name “Navy Revolver” is of earliest origin.
The Texas Navy had purchased the earlier Colt Paterson Revolver, but this was Colt’s first major success in the gun trade, the naval theme of the engraved cylinder of the Colt 1851 Navy revolver was Colt’s gesture of appreciation. The cylinder was engraved with a scene of the victory of the Second Texas Navy at the Battle of Campeche on May 16, 1843. Despite the Navy designation, the revolver was mainly purchased by civilians and military land forces.

The most well known “Navy Revolver” users included Robert E. Lee, Wild Bill Hickok, Doc Holliday, Richard Francis Burton, and Ned Kelly, and many others not as well known. Usage of the colt revolver continued long after the more well known modern cartridge revolvers were introduced in 1873.
